There are increasing concerns about healthy hair and a healthy environment. As a result, we have received many questions about shampoo bars. Some questions/issues were:
Which one should I use because I have natural hair?
I have very oily hair; will it clarify my scalp?
I have dry hair; will it help with my volume or frizziness?
I have interracial children; which one should they use?
It isn't easy to give one answer to everyone. The problem is that so many variables can affect how a shampoo bar will work for each individual that it is often difficult to pinpoint the proper solution. So we wrote this blog to create possible solutions.
Let's Talk About our.gentle.truth bars First.
We consider all of our soaps to be "shampoo" bars.
See the definitions below:

Many hair types and genetic factors affect the scalp, oil production, structure, water (hard or soft water), and hair volume. Look at the chart below to see which category you identify with most.

This chart can give you an excellent base to find out which product to use, but everyone is unique. We posted the same chart to the right on Facebook, and the comments were all different.
Some said: 2a and dry 2a and oily
2c and 3a depending on the day.
So we can't recommend just one product on the hair type alone. It should be based on scalp oil production, hair type, and other products you regularly put in your hair.
We recommend starting with a few samples of bars that seem to work for most hair types for first-time customers. Use them one at a time so that you can judge how they make your hair and scalp feel. We often tell customers to take notes on what they like or don't like about each soap or shampoo bar. You may have to experience a few shampoo blends to find the right fit for your hair.
The Raw Ginger bar is the first shampoo we recommend for beginners. It is 'clean-rinsing' and lighter. Plus, the ginger and lime can clarify the scalp without stripping it. It also may help to prevent hair loss, repair damaged hair. We have had customers with 2a, 3a, and 4c hair say they loved it for their scalp.
CONCERN 1 - DRY 4A, 4B,4C HAIR

Type 4 hair types are pretty delicate and usually have a tougher time retaining moisture. Sometimes these hair types pre-poo before washing to keep natural oils in their scalp. This is generally because popular shampoos contain detergents that strip the hair of its natural oils.
Dry hair is often the result of decreased sebum production, the natural skin oil necessary to keep the scalp and hair moist and lubricated. Dry hair lacks the oil and moisture it needs to give it sheen and a soft texture. As a result, hair that's dry will be brittle and dull and have a straw-like texture. Typically this hair type needs moisture added after cleansing; we recommend using our new oils to lock in moisture.
Oil Collection
Our shampoo bars are formulated to promote healthy hair and scalp by cleaning without stripping natural oils! Some customers with dry hair have great results using our natural soaps on their hair. These bars we recommend contain natural butters or olive oil.

CONCERN 2 - OILY 2A, 2B ,2C, 3A HAIR

Oily scalp is the result of overactive sebaceous glands. Although these natural oils are essential for a well-hydrated scalp and healthy hair, excess oil can cause hair to become flat and difficult to work with.
The first reaction is to grab a bottle of “drying” shampoo. These shampoos dry out the hair and scalp by stripping away the natural protective oils.
The dried out scalp sends a signal to glands that it needs more oil. So drying out your hair and scalp aggravates the problem by encouraging the oil glands to produce more oil to compensate for the loss. You will end up going in circles.
Our clarifying bars like Raw Ginger, Himalayan Salt, and Lemongrass are formulated to promote healthy hair and scalp by cleaning without stripping natural oils! These bars go fast so, try to get your hands on them as soon as possible.
Natural shampoos containing citrus essential oils help balance oil production and are often great for oily scalp. Remember, there is probably going to be an adjustment period if you have an oiler scalp.
CONCERN 3 - Dry, Thin Hair (Any Hair type)
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f6ebdb50350f4069a60ad47306686d5d.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_752,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/f6ebdb50350f4069a60ad47306686d5d.jpg)
Frizzy hair usually affects types 2 and 3 the most due to the hair structure. Type 4 hair after shampooing typically shrinks back up after shampooing when no conditioning product is added. So this type might not get frizzy once dry unless manipulated.
But fine, thin, straight hair is often difficult to style and often appears lifeless and lacks vitality, bounce, and body. There are many causes for limp, dull hair.
genetics
general health
hormonal changes
aging
over-processing
harsh detergent shampoos
Often merely switching to a natural shampoo without detergents, detergent foam boosters, and other harsh chemicals help bring more body to your hair. So we recommend the Raw Ginger bar to help with this issue.
CONCERN 4 - I have interracial children; what should they use? (Any Hair type)

This question has come up. It is tough to answer because children can totally different hair types from both parents. For instance, one parent who is black and white can have a child with 4c hair and another child with 3b hair.
It can be difficult to say this product is for mixed kids. Genetics can seem so random. We advise you to look at the chart and see how your child's hair reacts to the bar. We are creating a sample variety pack very soon. Subscribe to our site to be notified once they are here.
As it was mentioned earlier, we recommend our Raw Ginger bar to start with because many customers with various hair types said it worked for them.
We hope this blog post helped everyone learn more about their hair and which bar is right for them. See all our bars here.
